Ofqual register guide · England
What does an awarding organisation’s recognition status mean?
Ofqual recognition is a status of an awarding organisation. It does not by itself mean a person is permitted to practise a profession. Start with the exact organisation, status date and qualification, then check any profession-specific regulator.
Source date: Ofqual Full Register snapshot collected ; public organisation-only projection generated . These counts describe that snapshot, not today’s live register.
The four labels in this snapshot
The approved public projection contains 351 organisation records. The counts below are organisations by their Ofqual status label; they are not numbers of people, permissions to practise or currently available qualifications.
| Status label | Organisations | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Recognised | 245 | Recognised at the source snapshot date. Confirm the latest entry and the specific qualification in Ofqual’s live register. |
| Surrendered | 82 | The snapshot labels the organisation as having surrendered recognition. Check the official record for the effective date and any transition arrangements. |
| Withdrawn | 20 | The snapshot labels recognition as withdrawn. Check the official record and its dates before relying on a past qualification. |
| Never been recognised | 4 | The snapshot includes this label for the organisation. Check exact identity and the live register before drawing a conclusion. |
Check the live Ofqual register for the current organisation status. Ofqual’s published surrender notice illustrates why an effective date and learner transition can matter.
How to check an organisation safely
- Match identity: search the exact name or recognition number in our dated register lookup, then verify it in Ofqual’s live register.
- Read the dates: a historical recognised-from date does not prove recognition still applies today; look for recognised-to and any official notice.
- Check the qualification: organisation recognition and the status of a particular qualification are separate facts. Use the live qualification entry and its availability dates.
- Check practice rules separately: professional registration, immigration, insurance and local requirements depend on the profession and jurisdiction.
Method and limits
Counts were computed from the published organisation-only projection derived from the Ofqual Full Register. Personal contact fields were removed before publication. Status labels are reproduced as supplied; this page does not infer why an organisation’s status changed. The four counts add to 351. Qualification counts in the projection include historical records and are not used as a measure of current approval here.
